When a WhatsApp order fails, we almost always look for the cause on the wrong side: the price was too high, the product wasn't liked, the customer was just comparing prices without any real intention to buy. In reality, after observing hundreds of conversations by Moroccan merchants, the real reasons are much dumber than that — and above all much easier to fix. Here are the five we see most often.

1. The message stays unanswered for hours

This is by far the most frequent and most expensive mistake. A customer writes at noon, the reply arrives at 7 pm. In between, they've either bought elsewhere or simply forgotten. It's not that they weren't interested; it's that the purchase intention on WhatsApp is almost always impulsive, and it doesn't survive several hours of waiting.

The solution isn't to reply faster by forcing everyone to watch their phone permanently, which is unsustainable. It's to have a system that acknowledges receipt immediately, even just to say "we're looking into it and we'll get back to you," while a human takes over if needed.

2. The customer has to repeat the same information several times

The customer gives their size, color and city in one message. An hour later, someone else takes over the conversation and asks for the same things again because the information got lost between two team members, or because nobody took notes. The customer then feels treated like a number, not like someone being followed properly, and many abandon at that exact moment, even if they had already decided to buy.

Keeping each customer's history visible to the whole team, with their previous orders and preferences, almost completely eliminates this problem.

3. No follow-up after the order

The order is placed, the cash-on-delivery payment is confirmed, and then... nothing. The customer doesn't know when their parcel will arrive, receives no tracking number, and starts worrying from the third day without news. Some simply cancel at delivery because they've lost trust in the meantime, even though the product was actually on its way.

A simple automatic confirmation message, followed by an update when the parcel actually ships, sharply reduces the cancellation rate at delivery. It's one of the most profitable changes a merchant can make, and yet one of the most neglected.

4. The catalog shown no longer matches reality

The customer asks for an item that's out of stock, we reply "yes it's available" out of habit or because nobody checked, and we discover the problem only when preparing the order. The customer waits, gets upset, and often leaves for good, even if we offer a decent alternative.

This happens more often than you'd think as soon as you manage stock separately between WhatsApp and your online store. Connecting the two, so the stock displayed is always up to date on both sides, avoids the kind of disappointment that costs you trust.

5. Too many separate messages for a single decision

Some merchants, with the best intentions in the world, drown the customer in questions: size, color, quantity, full address, payment method, final confirmation, each in a separate message. Every extra exchange is a chance for the customer to give up along the way, especially on mobile where typing long answers is tedious.

Reducing the number of back-and-forths needed to finalize an order — even by asking several questions in a single well-worded message — concretely changes the conversion rate. It's a detail that seems minor, but accumulated over hundreds of conversations a month, it represents a significant number of sales.

What to remember

None of these five mistakes is about the product or the price. They're all about the way the conversation is managed after the first message. That's actually good news: these are problems you can fix without changing suppliers and without lowering your prices, just by better structuring what happens between the "hello" and the confirmed order.
